Just Voices is a community-oriented activist choir in Ottawa, on unceded Algonquin territory. We use our voices to celebrate life, inspire social change and contribute to movements for social and environmental justice, peace, racial and gender equality, and struggles against violence, war and poverty. We seek to challenge the status quo through engaging and energizing music, and we encourage the wider community to join us in raising our voices and opening our minds to the possibility of a better world!
Choir members share a commitment to social and environment justice and have some musical background or introductory vocal abilities. Members are not required to read music, but it is expected that members can learn and carry their part, which is often in harmony with other sections of the choir. We are an enthusiastic amateur choir that welcome singers from diverse backgrounds. Our priority is in singing music that makes a difference, and sounding good while we do it!
Choir Director Duties
-Lead weekly evening rehearsals (Wednesday 7-9pm)
-Select annual repertoire, in consultation with choir members
-Provide overall musical direction and guidance to help individual choir members improve their singing, and to strengthen the musicality of the choir as a whole
-Attend monthly board meetings and participate in discussion related to choir governance, strategical planning and concert/gig preparations
The choir is active between September and June, usually with a main concert at the end of December and the end of June. Other smaller gigs occur throughout the year. Time commitment will vary (higher in lead-up to concerts or gigs), but on average is 5-7 hours a week.
Start Date: June 2016 (possibility of September 2016).
Essential qualifications:
Agree with our mission statement
Musical background including experience with singing, accompanying and leading a choral or other musical group
Ability to conduct a mixed-level choir
Assets:
Ability to arrange music
Patience and a sense of humour
